Everyday jewellery collection

Michael’s latest collection challenges the traditions and proposes a new material concept for Japanese aesthetics. By utilising natural material and new or eco-friendly material, his work invites people to utilise Japanese aesthetic concepts in a modern setting, providing opportunities to discover a perspective of beauty that is often neglected.

The aesthetic is reflected in the handcrafted components, including “Coffee leather” and textured metals, and the usage of unique gemstones. He juxtaposes minimal geometric forms with rustic textures to depict the contrast between perfection and imperfection, and considered the temporal quality that genuinely reveals the “Wabi-Sabiness” of the material through time.

This collection is inspired by his exploration of Japanese traditional concepts. By understanding the philosophy behind the use of natural materials, he believes that new materials that share values of Japanese aesthetics, especially eco-friendly and recycled material, should also be embraced, as we will, if not already, change nature.

He believes that Japanese aesthetics are universal and can be widely applied to art-making and jewellery design processes. In which by extracting the elements of the art jewellery “FU(NA)TURE”, he extended the philosophy to this everyday customisable jewellery collection that provides a chance for users and viewers to demonstrate Japanese aesthetics in an interactive, effortless, and accessible manner.

“The design is minimal yet complex, allowing you to discover new details when it changes through time, and uncover a unique perspective of beauty through plainness.” – Michael Lin
